When it's too cold outside to play, head over to the library to check out some of these great children's books about winter.

1. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

2. The Mitten by Jan Brett

3. The Snowman by Raymond Briggs

4. Animals in Winter by Henrietta Bancroft and Richard G. Van Gelder

5. Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you hear? by Eric Carle

6. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg

7. Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

Language Activities with the book, The Mitten:

*Compare and contrast the characteristics of the animals living in the mitten

*Have your kids make their own mittens out of construction paper and decide which animals they would like to live in their mitten

*Identify the different actions of the animals and act them out! (trot or scurry)

*Practice perspective taking of the girl when she realizes she's missing her mitten versus the animals who found a new 'home'

Now all you need to do is grab a mug of hot chocolate, snuggle under a warm blanket with your kids, and enjoy storytime.
